Volunteer spotlight ยท Disaster Tech Lab

When disaster strikes,
someone has to keep the lights on.
That someone could be you.

Disaster Tech Lab is looking for a Volunteer Community Manager to help coordinate the global network of people who restore emergency communications when everything else goes dark.

72 disaster deployments
15+ years of impact
๐ŸŒ deployed worldwide

A mission that matters

Since 2010, Disaster Tech Lab has been one of the quiet forces behind some of the world's most critical moments. After a tornado levels a town in the United States, a typhoon tears through the Philippines, or conflict displaces thousands in Ukraine โ€” DTL teams move in to rebuild the one thing that makes everything else possible: communication.

Phone calls to loved ones. Coordination between first responders. Aid organisations reaching vulnerable people. None of it works without connectivity. DTL makes that connectivity happen โ€” and they need people like you to help the network of humans behind it all stay strong.

Open position

Volunteer Community Manager

  • Engage and retain volunteers โ€” build relationships, celebrate contributions, keep the network alive
  • Recruit and onboard skilled people globally with a smooth entry into the mission
  • Match volunteer skills to field deployments and operational projects
  • Strengthen culture across a distributed, international team
  • Track engagement data to inform leadership and improve coordination

Who thrives in this role

DTL's volunteer network spans engineers who fly into crisis zones and operational contributors who keep the organisation running between disasters. The Community Manager is the connective tissue โ€” the person who makes sure no one falls through the cracks and every skill finds its moment.

Community management Empathetic communicator Organised & proactive Remote-first mindset Tech for good Cross-cultural fluency

Bonus points if you have experience in humanitarian response, nonprofit operations, or disaster work โ€” but passion and people skills are the real requirements.

What you get out of it

This is a remote, flexible volunteer position โ€” contribute from anywhere in the world, at a pace that works for you. In return, you'll work alongside a genuinely mission-driven international team, build hands-on experience in volunteer management and crisis coordination, and see the direct impact of your work in real disaster response efforts around the globe.

Seventy-two disasters responded to. Countless lives made a little less isolated in their worst moments. Your work here has a clear line to that.
