DTL delivers mobile hospital to Ukriane.

What do you do when you have injured people and the only appropriate hospital has no room? You arrange a hospital to come to you. That’s what Disaster Tech Lab arranged for last month.

In May, following a UN Cluster meeting dealing with medical evacuations, Disaster Tech Lab (DTL) founder and COO, Evert Bopp was approached by a Ukrainian doctor asking for help. The hospital she was working at was right on the frontline in Eastern Ukriane. It was overwhelmed with injured soldiers and civilians and new casualties continued to arrive. Helping the injured during times of war and natural disasters is exactly what Disaster Tech Lab does and Bopp wasted no time.

After assessing the need, DTL decided mobile hospitals were key. These would allow medics to treat anything from basic injuries requiring simple wound closures and setting of broken bones to critical, life-saving care including traumatic amputations.

The next step was to find such units. For this, DTL reached out to its network of partner organisations which included Adventists Help, a Swiss organization they had worked with before. Adventist Help was willing to fund the purchase of 4 mobile medical units costing €10,000 each. Appearing as a large shipping container on the outside, the units are fully equipped on the inside with advanced medical equipment including operating tables, specialist lighting, independent power, suction, airconditioning, medical storage and more.

DTL met with the vendor of these units, who is based in the Netherlands, and inspected the units for suitability and condition.

Once an agreement for purchase was made, the hospital units needed to be shipped. As the units were stored in The Netherlands, DTL arranged shipping to East Ukriane. On 22 June, the hospital units began their journey. Carried by the two trucks, they traveled thousands of kilometers, through four countries, arriving in Ukraine five days later.

With the hospital in place, medics near the frontline can now treat more wounds and save more lives resulting mainly from shelling. As a direct result of our donors’ generosity, the lives of soldiers and civilians, men, women, and children, will be saved.

We hope you’ll consider donating any amount to our Ukraine relief to help us continue to save lives by providing mobile hospitals, assisting in the evacuation of wounded soldiers and civilians to hospitals across Europe, purchasing hygienic mattresses for hospitalized children, and coordinating aid as required.
