Emergency Relief for Cebu Earthquake Survivors

On the night of September 30, 2025, at 9:59 PM local time, a devastating magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck just off the coast of Cebu Province in the Philippines. With an epicenter only 5 km deep, its shallow force caused widespread destruction across the region.

The Impact

The earthquake has resulted in at least 69 confirmed fatalities, with over 200 individuals injured. Thousands have been displaced, left without homes or access to basic necessities. The hardest-hit areas include Bogo City, San Remigio, Medellin, Tabogon, Sogod, and Tabuelan, where buildings have collapsed, roads have been damaged, and essential infrastructure has been compromised. Rescue operations are ongoing, though efforts are hampered by heavy rains, damaged infrastructure, and aftershocks. Teams are conducting house-to-house searches and utilizing sniffer dogs to locate survivors. A tsunami warning was briefly issued but later lifted. The region remains on high alert as aftershocks continue to pose risks. The Sun

Disaster Tech Lab’s Response

In the wake of this tragedy, Disaster Tech Lab (DTL) is deploying a combined Communications & Medical Team to support the affected communities, particularly rural areas that are often the last to receive aid.

Restoring Communications

In disaster scenarios, communication systems often fail, hindering coordination and relief efforts. DTL is addressing this by deploying Starlink terminals, portable radios, Wi-Fi networks, and other tools to reconnect cut-off communities. This communications aid will facilitate coordination among relief organizations and ensure that affected communities can access vital information and support.

Delivering Emergency Medical Care

DTL’s volunteer medical team will establish pop-up medical clinics in rural communities, providing urgent pre-hospital care. Services will include stabilizing injuries, treating wounds, managing dehydration and shock, and supporting communities until they can access full medical facilities. This initiative aims to alleviate the immediate medical needs of those affected by the earthquake.

A History of Support

Disaster Tech Lab has a longstanding commitment to aiding the Philippines in times of crisis. Following Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in November 2013, which displaced over 4 million people and resulted in more than 6,000 deaths, DTL deployed teams to various locations across the Northern half of Cebu. Their efforts included building communication infrastructure, providing communication services, running medical clinics, and training local volunteers in first aid and medical skills. (details)

This experience has equipped DTL with the knowledge and resources to respond swiftly and effectively to the current crisis in Cebu. Their teams are once again mobilizing to provide essential services to the affected communities.
