π Looking Back While Moving Forward.
While a new Disaster Tech Lab team is currently on the ground in the Philippines, assisting with disaster response efforts, today we take a moment to look back at one of our defining missions.
Exactly 10 years ago, DTL was deeply involved in responding to the refugee crisis in Greece. With thousands of refugees arriving daily on the shores of the Greek islands, connectivity was not a luxury β it was a lifeline.
What began as a single WiFi hotspot on Lesvos quickly grew into a network covering most of the island, and eventually 18 refugee camps across Greece β connecting over 400,000 users, including refugees, NGOs, government agencies, and volunteer groups.
The images below capture just a glimpse of what those days were like β intense, humbling, and deeply human.
We are profoundly grateful to all our past and present volunteers and technology partners who make it possible for us to bring connectivity, coordination, and compassion to where itβs needed most. π
