Philippines deployment 2013

SuperTyphoon Yolanda made landfall early on Nov 8 in Guiuan municipality, Eastern Samar province, Eastern Visayas region.  The storm hit with 150mph winds and gusts up to 170mph.  Roads have been impacted in Region V and Region VIII.   There is no cell phone signal in Regions VII and VIII as well as 4 municipalities in Northern Cebu. Storm surges and flash floods have been reported in Eastern Samar and Leyte, causing significant damage to buildings and houses, according to OCHA. A landslide in Cebu has also been reported by the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Strong winds and heavy rainfall have disrupted telecommunications,  limiting information coming out of affected areas, particularly Eastern Samar and Leyte A total number of 151,910 families (748k persons) were evacuated to 664 evacuation centers in 31 provinces, 32 cities 181 municipalities.   Collaboration is in place with PAF-AFP, PN-AFP, PCG-DOTC, Air 21, PAL Foundation and UN WFP for the land, air and sea transport of relief resources.

Disaster Tech Lab is currently preparing two teams for deployment to the city of Cebu in the Philippines.

Our tech-team will provide internet access and communication services for communities and organisation in the area between Cebu City and Daanbantayan at the Northern end of the island.  They will be building wifi networks, provide VoIP services and build a number of public internet cafes.

We are also sending a medical team which will carry out two task; they will provide medical expertise and assistance at a local hospital and secondly they will carry out medical reconnaissance in the area between Cebu and Daanbantayan at the Northern end of the island.  Gathered data will be both mapped and shared with other NGO’s and healthcare organisations.

The team consists of volunteers from the Philippines, USA, Canada, Netherland, Ireland and the UK.

With the 1st team now complete we are looking for volunteers for a 2nd team which will depart around the middle of December. For this we’re in need of people with the following skillsets: WiFi & networking , project managers, EMT’s, Combat Medic, VoIP, WASH/Sanitation, RN’s,
